Sally Phillips

Thought I’d share this article by Sally Phillips, well known UK actress (Smack the Pony was a personal favourite) who has become a campaigner for people with Down Syndrome since she had a child with the condition. She made a film about it a year or so ago looking at the side of women terminating their pregnancies when they learn their child might have DS.

This article covers her views on mainstream versus specialist education. Although I work in specialist services I agree with her (there will always be a need for specialist staff and services) Being in mainstream education isn’t just positive for the person with a disability but also for the other children in the school, this is a really important point around kids learning about empathy and differences.
